Client need:

Create and fully manage non-profit foundation to provide support for all efforts of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) by establishing a strategic plan to grow development, communications, strategic marketing, public affairs and grassroots efforts.

Execution:

Working with the board of directors, JHL Company helped establish the CPRIT Foundation organization and advance its growing presence in the national cancer arena. Operations are managed entirely by JHL staff with Jennifer Lustina Stevens serving as Executive Director.

Accomplishments:

  • In a three month period, JHL created and implemented a successful strategic plan including an inaugural policy roundtable meeting and fundraising dinner benefiting the Foundation. The inaugural event raised over $300,000, included over 250 participants, including Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, Sen. Jane Nelson, Rep. Jim Keffer, Rep. Patrick Rose, Rep. Geannie Morrison.
  • JHL now additionally coordinates CPRIT’s annual scientific conference each fall for an audience of 1,000 attendees. Numerous state and federal officials have participated in the program each year along with numerous celebrities and VIPs including several Nobel Laureates.
  • Public affairs and grassroots success includes successfully educating state legislators to renew the Institute’s tax-payer funded bond appropriations during a budget-deficit intensive session. Cancer advocate volunteers walked the halls on Cancer Awareness Day at the Capitol after a standing room only press event with top legislative champions, dozens of grassroots advocates, and Lance Armstrong.
  • The CPRIT Foundation now operates on a budget of over $1.25 million annually as the program content and communications efforts continue to expand.
